It’s a small world after all….

October 8, 2013 by susanmoirmackay

Pyxus 13 – mixed media – 2013 Its a small world after all… I made this piece in The Bahamas before we packed up and left. It was inspired by the small hidden places where one might tuck secrets – a cavity of unwelcome things. A common white fabric that has stitched in its entrails unspoken and unspeakable truths. I wonder about all the things we hide, especially from ourselves.  How well we must stitch them deeper and deeper inside. Inevitably […]

NE6- Anthropology 2012- Human, System, Object.

January 19, 2013 by susanmoirmackay

2012 was supposed to be our end time and yet, we are still here! ‘Kingdom Come’ was the title of this year’s National Exhibition at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas. Artists were invited to explore the theme of apocalypse, personal or universal. Interestingly apocalypse ‘translated literally from Greek, is a disclosure of knowledge, hidden from humanity in an era dominated by falsehood and misconception’. (wikipedia) This quote intrigued me. And I decided to direct my approach from this […]

Boundaries- An Art and Phenomenological Experience

June 7, 2012 by susanmoirmackay

Tonight I introduced to a few brave souls, my concept for an art and phenomenological experience.  8 of us altogether, a healthy mix of spiritual and art minded characters.   I am not leading this event, merely offering my fellow travelers a formula in which to follow.  I am not leading because I have been curious to do this exercise for a while…and so I wanted to share the idea with my friends and see what happens…. Also, L’Utopia is […]

3 men.

August 7, 2011 by susanmoirmackay

O and I went to an event the other weekend.  it was ‘alternative’.  I phrase it carefully, this is a strange country. The people attending were not the ‘normal’ crowd.  Everyone fascinated me.  I wanted to paint them all, I could see so much on them, or at least I imagined I did.  Its hard to know if I was projecting.  But certainly I was inspired to portray what I imagined.  So I asked the two people we knew at the […]

Portrait: Friends with perspective

July 15, 2011 by susanmoirmackay

I have been struggling again with the concept of finding a commonality for all the portraits, feeling often overwhelmed by perceived cruelty.  Looking at the world after my post about fear and being given examples to disprove my theory.  Violence seeming to be a staple of being human. And I have been thinking about friends and friendships. A friend laments that we are all too busy to spend time like we did when we are school.  THis fast paced efficient […]

sex, pornography, making love

censorship

June 29, 2011 by susanmoirmackay

Last week I had a small gathering chez nous to show my Freeport friends the pieces ”Psyche Pollution’,  ’21 Religious Thoughts…..’ and ‘Disparity Reality – Woman’ .   The point of the evening was to incite conversation about some of the issues raised in the work.  For example carbon footprint, what does it mean to be a woman, and our inner psychological reality affecting our outer environment. Upon setting up the work “Psyche Pollution” in our dinning room cove, (this work was a response […]

pornography/ making love

June 9, 2011 by susanmoirmackay

Cardinal Sin 3—Lust (Sex / Making Love / Pornography) “Pornography is the attempt to insult sex, to do dirt on it.”—D.H. Lawrence. Body image continues as a theme, in the realm of sex, sexuality and pornography. An act that is imbued with love has become a place of degradation—misogyny and self-hatred. In Tantric tradition sex is seen as a holy act between two people irrespective of body shape or age. Images of humans and the gods show the divine nature […]

process- seeds- life- chaos – growth

May 23, 2011 by susanmoirmackay

So a couple of months ago the kids and I bought some of those tiny little pre dried compost.  You have to pour water on them, and they balloon out and then in the moist earth mini towers they become you pop in the seeds.  We had tomato, basil, cucumbers, catnip for kiki our cat, sweet pea, and some other flowers.  We were super excited when they began to sprout.  It seemed so incredible that from those hard minute objects, we could witness […]
