Selfie Society!

November 21, 2013 by susanmoirmackay

My children are posing in front of me, lips flared, bottoms sticking out – with dramatic obscenity and two fingers held up in front of their faces. This, they tell me, is the new style for ‘selfies’. Selfies, in case you somehow missed it, is a self portrait (photograph) posted online. And the point of the selfies, to my cynically bemused eye, is to remind the world, if not yourself, how fabulous you look! Or an opportunity for self flagellation […]

Blood, bones, hair and soap…

October 10, 2013 by susanmoirmackay

There is an awful intimacy to drawing on bones. These are the bones of a dolphin. As I plot and mark or discover each slight nuanced gradient with my pen or pencil I feel as if I am probing into an unspeakable salty truth. But there is also something overwhelmingly awe inspiring in the intricacy of the structure of the bone. The bones fit in an astoundingly precise sequence to create what once was its back bone. Each […]

NE6- Anthropology 2012- Human, System, Object.

January 19, 2013 by susanmoirmackay

2012 was supposed to be our end time and yet, we are still here! ‘Kingdom Come’ was the title of this year’s National Exhibition at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas. Artists were invited to explore the theme of apocalypse, personal or universal. Interestingly apocalypse ‘translated literally from Greek, is a disclosure of knowledge, hidden from humanity in an era dominated by falsehood and misconception’. (wikipedia) This quote intrigued me. And I decided to direct my approach from this […]

Boundaries: The Experience- Art and Phenomenological!

June 16, 2012 by susanmoirmackay

Last night I had disturbed dreams, flashes of colour, an intense vision of looking through back lit trees in a dark night – a vivid green, lime and yellow flashing across my eyes.  There was some feeling of connecting the pieces we had made earlier at the hall in L’Utopia with this ephemeral, translucent colour. And so another Wednesday night spent restlessly, resulting in getting up and reading till 5.30am in an attempt to draw myself back into sleep. Was I over […]

there is no sin

July 4, 2011 by susanmoirmackay

So after all my thoughts trying to make sense of the energy of censorship and the reality of sex/ making love.  I cant help but think about morals. I recently re watched the fascinating TED talk by Patricia Burchatt about dark energy and dark matter.  It intrigues me to imagine that (although it is all currently theoretical), the basic premise based on the evidence that they have, is that beyond the small percentage of matter, earth, us, trees, planets, stars etc, the […]

censorship

June 29, 2011 by susanmoirmackay

Last week I had a small gathering chez nous to show my Freeport friends the pieces ”Psyche Pollution’,  ’21 Religious Thoughts…..’ and ‘Disparity Reality – Woman’ .   The point of the evening was to incite conversation about some of the issues raised in the work.  For example carbon footprint, what does it mean to be a woman, and our inner psychological reality affecting our outer environment. Upon setting up the work “Psyche Pollution” in our dinning room cove, (this work was a response […]

pornography/ making love

June 9, 2011 by susanmoirmackay

Cardinal Sin 3—Lust (Sex / Making Love / Pornography) “Pornography is the attempt to insult sex, to do dirt on it.”—D.H. Lawrence. Body image continues as a theme, in the realm of sex, sexuality and pornography. An act that is imbued with love has become a place of degradation—misogyny and self-hatred. In Tantric tradition sex is seen as a holy act between two people irrespective of body shape or age. Images of humans and the gods show the divine nature […]

process- seeds- life- chaos – growth

May 23, 2011 by susanmoirmackay

So a couple of months ago the kids and I bought some of those tiny little pre dried compost.  You have to pour water on them, and they balloon out and then in the moist earth mini towers they become you pop in the seeds.  We had tomato, basil, cucumbers, catnip for kiki our cat, sweet pea, and some other flowers.  We were super excited when they began to sprout.  It seemed so incredible that from those hard minute objects, we could witness […]

good things happening

January 27, 2011 by susanmoirmackay

I demanded time in the studio today, even though it was hard to push the faces away from me.  The kids sweetness calling to me all day. But for my sanity, even though I was tired from such a full morning, I demanded myself to go in there. I was given a secret to follow after one of my long meditations. Meditations where I am searching to shift the heaviness that seems to have stuck to me.  The secret  was the answer […]

finding reality in the super reality

January 2, 2011 by susanmoirmackay

Its been slow, what with the kids being off for christmas, not so much free time. I have done a few more sketch that have left me frustrated.  Not only frustrated by my slow skill, which I know will only improve with doing an abundance of drawings, but frustrated by my preoccupation with my ‘slow skill’. I am frustrated by needing to draw realistically.  A need set by me, but one that seems to be inhibiting my creativity.   Im used […]
